Industrial Designer

We are Pensa, the Brooklyn creative force behind the D.I.Wire, Street Charge, the Merge urban bicycle and the ONEBLADE razor. We are looking for talented and brilliant Industrial Designers to join our team.

Candidates must have:

  • a degree in Industrial Design
  • 4+ years of experience working as an Industrial Designer

This position requires:

  • Excellent conceptualization and sketching skills
  • World class form giving ability
  • A hands-on approach, comfortable prototyping and working in a workshop
  • Great story-telling: the ability to communicate your design strategy and vision to your fellow team members and to clients
  • Solid experience in preparing, executing and interpreting generative research
  • Expert-level knowledge of 2D illustration (Adobe Creative Suite) and 3D CAD software (Rhino & Solidworks preferred)
  • Ability to lead a design team and move projects forward – including developing and maintaining a vision, creative deliverables, timeline, and budget management
  • Understanding of materials, plastic and metal production processes, quality control and other techniques for manufacturing

Mechanical Engineer

Pensa, the Brooklyn creative force behind the D.I.Wire, Street Charge, the Merge urban bicycle and goTenna, is looking for an experienced mechanical engineer to join their talented, diverse and passionate team. Pensa is known for its ability to create beautiful functionality. Our engineers are inventors that know how to connect solutions with user needs. Pensa’s engineers love design and help our clients solve their hardest product challenges. They have a passion for creating compelling new technologies, developing them for production and lining up strategic manufacturing plans. If you have world-class talent, a passion for product design and invention, and a desire to work on a wide range of products in a fun, creative and collaborative design studio, we’d like to meet you.

Candidates must have:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • 5-8yrs experience working as an Mechanical Engineer in product design and development
  • Expert-level understanding of materials, plastic and metal production processes
  • Expert-level skills in 3D CAD software (Solidworks preferred)
  • 5+ yrs experience in consumer product design demonstrating ability to resolve 3D form language and to develop products for mass production
  • Ability to lead a team and move projects forward – including vision, creative deliverables, timeline, and budget management
  • A big plus: Experience programming/coding, Arduino, Processing and electro-mechanics

Engineering Intern/Co-Op Spring 2019

Pensa’s engineers love design and help our clients solve their hardest product challenges. They have a passion for creating compelling new technologies, developing them for production and lining up strategic manufacturing plans. If you have world-class talent, a passion for product design and invention, and a desire to work on a wide range of products in a fun, creative and collaborative design studio, we’d like to meet you.
As an engineering intern or co-op, you will: 

  • Learn about real-world application of engineering practices and concepts through hands-on participation in both internal and client-based projects, and through the mentorship of our senior staff
  • Collaborate in qualitative fieldwork, brainstorming and ideation sessions
  • Perform 3D CAD of parts and assemblies (SolidWorks)
  • Build prototypes and mockups of your concepts (rapid prototyping and/or traditional fabrication)
  • Plan, execute, and report engineering tests
  • Collaborate on design reviews and decision making, and engage in highly technical engineering discussions
  • Have ownership of your projects

To be an engineering intern or co-op, we require that you:

  • Are a student pursuing an engineering degree, or are a recent grad
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Have a hands-on approach and are comfortable prototyping and working in a workshop
  • Have a basic understanding of materials, mechanisms and manufacturing processes
  • Demonstrate proficiency with 3D CAD software (Solidworks preferred)
  • Thrive while working under minimum supervision in a fast-paced environment
  • Quickly adapt and react to changes of direction in your projects
  • Are well organized, self-motivated and have a great attention to detail

Application Engineer - D.I.Wire

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity in the digital fabrication industry? Pensa Labs, maker of the D.I.Wire, the first and only benchtop CNC wire bender, is seeking a qualified, experienced Application Engineer.  Working as a bridge between customers, and our sales and engineering teams, our Application Engineer will take customer input and sales information to help configure a solution for each customer’s  application. You will help develop solutions, test and implement customized hardware and software solutions for customers. You will also provide technical support and expertise to customers, respond to customer feedback, test new hardware, occasionally install systems, assist in maintenance and perform sales presentations and demonstrations.Put your ideas and experience to work as the Application Engineer and help us inform the sales and R&D process while winning over customers with your configured solutions.

In order to provide solutions that satisfy customers, an Application Engineer performs many different tasks, including:

Pre-Sales Support

  • Help the sales team qualify customers by determining if the D.I.Wire is a good fit for the customer’s applications.
  • Configure the D.I.Wire machine specs to meet customer requirements and help the sales team with a quote for the configuration.
  • Work with customers to understand the nuances of their applications, from the parts they want to make, the quantity of units per month and quality of the output.
  • Analyze the customer needs, and develop short programs in our D.I.Wire software to test customer parts.

Post Sales Support & Customer Satisfaction

  • Onboard D.I.Wire customers as they first integrate the machine into their process.
  • Provide customers with ongoing technical support, including responding to customer issues, providing updated software, performing installs for key customers.  You will be responsible for customer satisfaction.

New Product Development Support

  • Maintain a log of problems customers encounter and inform R&D to help generate innovative concepts that solve common user problems.
  • Maintain a log of most customer requested features that we currently do not have, to inform the development of future iterations of the D.I.Wire.
  • Prior to launch, test new software updates for bugs.

Application Engineer Skills

Application Engineers work at the intersection of the engineering, sales and manufacturing teams. You must have strong communication skills to facilitate teamwork across groups. Application engineers are uniquely talented in both customer service and detail-oriented, analytical tasks. Applicants with experience in digital fabrication, software and electronic hardware development will have a strong advantage.

Core skills: 

  • Strong project management abilities, with well organized timelines and deliverable expectations
  • Excellent communication skills, written, verbal and visual
  • Collaborative approach, working across disciplines
  • Professional manner with customers
  • Ability to simplify complex ideas into understandable concepts, for sales and support
  • Demonstrate analytical skills
  • Bachelor’s or Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in computer science, mechanical engineering, or related discipline
  • Knowledge of basic coding skills
  • Familiarity with digital fabrication
  • Hardware development experience is a big plus
